Statsbygg buildingSMART Aquarium, Norway

 - early phase costing of Mechanical  Electrical and Plumbing (MEP)

Key information:

  • Start: March 2008
  • Problem owner: Statsbygg, a Norwegian public owner organization, manages approx. 2,3 million m2 of floor space and annual building/construction budget is approx. NOK 2,5 billion (approx. € 320 mill).
  • Problem focus: Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) may account for up to 40 to 70 % of construction cost. in early phase even a minor improvement of the cost estimate may provide for better decisions and large savings for a project. The problem is to transfer necessary information from BIM with MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) to QTO/specification/costing systems to do cost estimates.
  • Solution: The involved systems are A) a MEP BIM system and B) a QTO/specification/costing system. harmonized with other similar efforts (Germany base quantities, AECOO, Boligprodusentene) Pilot demonstrated based on new Exchange Requirement (ER) (A-DDS and B-Calcus)
  • Experience:
    • The concept & problem learning from this project has been enormous
    • Domain standards support approximation
    • Constructive and generally very positive feedback at ISG meeting Amsterdam presentation 23rd of June 2008
