buildingSMART International

BuildingSMART is an international membership organisation with representation in North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia. It brings together architects, engineers, constructors, product manufacturers and facilities managers, along with software vendors and progressive construction customers.

Leading experts from around the world have helped to define and develop the standards or protocols to be used as a framework for data exchange, creating the Industry Foundation Classes (or IFCs) and gaining ISO recognition. Building performance and predictability of outcomes are greatly improved by adopting Building Information Models (BIM) and sharing these rich data with the open protocol IFC.

BuildingSMART’s emphasis now is to demonstrate the efficiency and sustainability benefits that true interoperability can deliver and to help members and their supply chains in implementation.

In order to enable the organisation to address specific user problems incurring high costs, the ‘Aquarium’ and ‘IFC Solution Factory’ have been created. It brings together users with a commonhigh value problems and software developers with the potential to produce a working solution.

Theservice offer of buildingSMART International Alliance is to:

  • Develop and operate a global standard;
  • Support members in business generation;
  • Provide them with a sounding board in the International Organisation;
  • Syndicate technical development work, promotion and marketing.
