How to become a member

Criteria for Membership of BuildingSMART International

BuildingSMART International has clearly articulated purposes in its Memorandum of Association which qualify it under various legal jurisdictions as a not-for-profit tax exempt organisation. Compliance with these purposes by constituent Alliances is essential to continued approval by authorizing governmental agencies, and to ensure that BuildingSMART International sustains credibility with all its constituent bodies and their members. It is therefore essential that all Organisations applying for recognition byBuildingSMART International agree fully to the following membership criteria.

  • Each constituent Alliance shall comply with its own legal requirements to maintain eligibility as a not-for-profit entity
  • Each Alliance shall be independent of any commercial control, undue influence by any trade association, technical or professional society, or regulation by an outside agency, corporation, or institution.
  • Each Alliance shall open its membership to all applicants; membership fees shall be equally assessed to all members in the same classification so as not to discriminate against any individual company, corporation, institution, profession, agency or other entity.
  • The work product of each Chapter shall be made equally available to all members in good standing. This includes technical data, Industry Foundation Class (IFC) drafts and releases, case study results, and other market and technical material developed, collected, analyzed or produced by IAI locally or internationally. Equal availability shall be interpreted to mean full and complete access to all information in a timely fashion, not favouring any one member or group of members.

Application for Membership

Before an Alliance can be recognized for membership it shall specify its status recognition under the laws of its home jurisdiction. Once recognition as a not-for-profit entity has been determined, the candidate Alliance shall provide to the Council Secretary:

  • A copy of its approved constitution and/or registration papers.
  • The names and business addresses of the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and other officers.
  • The business office, postal and email addresses, telephone and facsimile numbers, and the name of the business manager or executive director, if one has been named.
  • A copy of the fee structure, including annual membership (sponsorship) by class, and the projected annual income.
  • A signed letter of commitment that the applicant will voluntarily comply with the Criteria for Membership and will make every effort to pay its share of BuildingSMART’s International costs as determined by the Council.
